Darjeeling Toy Train or Darjeeling Himalayan Railway is a narrow gauge route between Siliguri and Darjeeling in West Bengal state of India, run by the Indian Railways.The entire Darjeeling Himalayan Railway has been declared as a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO in 1999. The trains are crucial for Darjeeling tourism and are also one of the highlights of tourism in India. The unique feature of the trains is that they are still hauled by steam locomotives, although a diesel engine has been included in recent times for mail delivery.
Services and Tours: The Darjeeling Toy Train operated by the DHR has recently been offered to the general public as part of their chartered services. Tourists can now book these trains for large groups and choose their own composition of carriages. The chartered services usually involve steam locomotives.
Joy Ride Train: composed of 3 first class coaches and a B class locomotive, the train runs from Darjeeling to Ghum and back, with stops at Batasia Loop and Ghum museum.
Meeting on arrival at Kolkata (Calcutta) and transfer to the hotel. Afternoon city tour of Kolkata which includes visit to the Fort William, Victoria memorial, the Indian museum, St. Paul's cathedral, Birla Planetarium and the Botanical gardens. Overnight at the hotel.
Moring after breakfast at the hotel transfer to Kolkata airport to board flight for Bagdogra. Meeting on arrival and transfer to Siliguri and check into the hotel. Afternoon visit the New Jalpaiguri loco shed. Watch the engine drives preparing engines, some of which were originally built in Glasgow.
Morning transfer to New Jalpaiguri railway station and board Darjeeling Himalayan Railway at 09:15hrs. Arrive Darjeeling and transfer to the hotel. Rest of the evening free. Your car and driver will carry your baggage in the car and will run parallel to the train. In between you can jump onto the car and than to the train and you will have ample opportunity to take photographs by changing the ride between the car and train.
Early morning visit Ghoom Monastery to see one of the largest statues of the Maitreya Buddha, Himalayan Zoo and Natural History Museum, which has a fine collection of preserved butterflies, birds, reptiles, insects of the Himalayas.
Darjeeling at an altitude of 7,000 feet. Called the ‘Queen of the Himalayas.’ It affords unparalleled views of the majestic peaks.
